Something I’ve been focusing on more of in the last few months or so is Physical Discipline. I’ve always been relatively active and mindful of keeping the body in decent condition but in the last months I’ve definitely been more focussed in my approach. I’ve started to really enjoy it as a way of developing more self-discipline and that has been the main motivation for training as of late. I value self discipline because I value freedom. I realized a while ago that the two kind of go hand in hand, and physical discipline helps me to develop more self discipline.
In terms of training style I like to aim for functionality and naturalness in the body. I see a lot of emphasis on aesthetics and size which I guess is ok but not at the expense of destroying the body. I saw a doco of a famous bodybuilder, he is huge and ripped, saying he could only sleep with like a massive amount of pillows I’m guessing strategically placed to allow for a comfortable night sleep. What’s the point of training your body in that way if it doesn’t even allow you to maintain the ability to sleep effectively?
So for me at the moment discipline, freedom, and functionality/effectiveness are the main motivators behind my training. I see it as a tool that can be used to aid one in dealing with the challenges of human life, as well as a tool to aid in recorrecting the physical dysfunctions modern living promotes e.g. forward head posture from phones/computers.
I like to draw my info from a variety of sources and of course also from my own experimentation/understanding with my own body but a couple of people that I like to get info from at the moment are Ido Portal and Eero Westerberg. I don’t agree with all of Ido Portal’s philosophies but he’s got a ton of useful insights on physical training and the human body etc. And I like Eero’s material as well, covers a wide spectrum and I like the journey that they have taken with their training philosophies.
So that’s it for this post: Physical Disciple, Self-Discipline, Self-Empowerment, Liberation. They all go hand in hand in aiding one to create a better life for ones self, one step at a time.
